Dolní Lukavice lies in the valley of the Úhlava River. The village is about three kilometres north of Přeštice. Its first written mention dates to 1216.

The Baroque, three-winged castle was rebuilt at great expense from 1708 by Count Ferdinand Matyáš z Morzinu. Composer Joseph Haydn served the Morzins as Kapellmeister at the castle, where his early symphonies were composed. The castle is surrounded by a park laid out in the early 18th century, where a metasequoia around 170 years old grows. The Church of St Peter and St Paul also stands in the village, and a Jewish cemetery has been preserved there.
